2020 Q2 WEEE Collected Data Published
Latest WEEE collected data released by the Environment Agency (1 September 2020) demonstrates that as expected less WEEE was collected in Q2, in comparison to the first 3 months of 2020
The data shows that there was a significant reduction in WEEE collected in Q2. Overall 64,112 tonnes was collected compared to 113,641 tonnes in Q1 this year and 122,982 tonnes in 2019 Q2.
The graph below shows the percentage of WEEE collected per category in Q2 2020. The 50% percentage of target achieved mark indicates where the figures should be at this point in the year (half-way through 2020) to be on track to meet the set targets for the year, highlighting we are behind target for all categories except category 14 which is having a strong year.

The signification reduction in WEEE collected in Q2 was expected due to the closures of Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) which is likely had the greatest impact along with reduced retailer takebacks and general collections of WEEE from businesses.
In early July, DEFRA issued guidance which stated that there was no reason why HWRCs could not reopen and encouraged local authorities to take steps to ensure that access to HWRCs for residents was possible issuing guidance on their safe operation. Q3 collection figures are expected to show an increase and will give a clearer indication of the overall impact of the Covid-19 lockdown on WEEE collected this year.
