The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007 are being reformed to a system of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The current producer responsibility system for packaging has operated since 1997, but it has never covered the full costs of the collection, sorting, and treatment of packaging waste.

Defra have today (21st of November 2024) published an updated Recyclability Assessment Methodology (RAM) for further comment from stakeholders, following the publication of the first draft and the first survey in October 2024.

Packaging EPR Regulations laid in Parliament

On Thursday 24th of October 2024, the packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Regulations were laid before the Houses of Parliament, where they will sit for 40 days before passing into law.

Defra have today (17th October 2024) published the Recyclability Assessment Methodology (RAM) publicly for comment from stakeholders, via their Resource & Waste Newsletter.

Packaging EPR ‘illustrative’ fees updated

Government published updated ‘illustrative’ packaging EPR (pEPR) disposal fee rates on Monday 30th of September 2024, since updating the calculation methodology and following industry engagement.

Labelling temporarily removed from packaging EPR

Government have taken the decision to remove the packaging labelling provisions in the Main pEPR Statutory Instrument (SI).

Government publishes ‘illustrative’ disposal fee rates

The first iteration of ‘illustrative’ disposal fees has been published by Government today, 15th of August 2024.

The UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2013 (as amended) is the primary legislation governing electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in the UK. The government are looking to reform these regulations (WEEE Extended Producer Responsibility) to increase levels of separately collected WEEE for re-use and recycling, and to ensure that producers and distributors of electrical and electronic products finance the full net cost of collection and proper treatment of products that end up as waste.

One week to go! WEEE consulation closes on the 7th March

Defra released a consultation and a call for evidence on December 28, 2023, about the amendment of The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013. The current WEEE regulations are being reformed by the government since they have been in effect for almost 18 years and have not significantly changed.

Defra announce 'Simpler Recycling' plans

The European Union (EU) is moving forward with mandatory DPPs for certain products categories by 2027, starting with batteries, and possibly electricals and apparel.

Looking Ahead: Digital Product Passports

The European Union (EU) is moving forward with mandatory DPPs for certain products categories by 2027, starting with batteries, and possibly electricals and apparel. By 2030, the EU aims to expand DPPs to around 30 product categories.
