Climate Change Emergency

11,000 scientists from around the world have endorsed an article published on 5 November 2019, stating that the world is entering a climate change emergency

Through the use of 40 years’ worth of data, the scientists have sought to use other indicators linked to climate change rather than simply using global surface temperature, which only demonstrates a fraction of the bigger picture. These factors include the growth of human and animal populations, loss of tree coverage, meat production (per person) and fossil fuel consumption.

The article also highlights some of the improvements made, which include an increase in the use of renewables by 373% per decade and the growing public concern surrounding environmentalism. Despite repeating some of the warning made in previous climate change warnings, the article seeks to provide a clear and simple graphical representation of the indicators to raise both public and governmental awareness. There are six key areas where the article has focused on, those being:

  • Energy
  • Short-lived pollutants
  • Nature
  • Food
  • Economy
  • Population

The key outcomes of these areas being in the reduction of land clearing, a shift from predominantly meat based diets and stabilising population growth. The article has tackled the tricky issue surrounding population growth that is often considered too controversial to handle, however, the authors have stated that curbing the population growth is necessary to ensure feasible change.

Based on the research started 40 years ago, this article demonstrates the key indicators pushing us closer to a climate change emergency. In summary, it suggests that some radical changes need to be made to society to avoid this emergency.
