DEFRA confirm the 2020 WEEE compliance fee methodology...
It has been confirmed today (3 February 2021) by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) that the methodology put forward by the Joint Trade Association (JTA) has been chosen as the mechanism to determine the WEEE compliance fee for the 2020 compliance year.
This follows a consultation which came to an end in November 2020. The mechanism allows Producer Compliance Schemes to achieve compliance if collection targets are not met.
Similarly, to 2019, only two proposals were put forward: The Joint Trade Association (JTA) and Valpak; both proposals aim to encourage schemes to take the necessary steps to meet their collection targets through procurement of recycling evidence generated through collections of waste electrical equipment, rather than using the compliance fee. The money that is generated through the compliance fee is managed by Material Focus and their Recycle Your Electricals Campaign, which aims to get the nation reusing and recycling old electricals in response to the increasing threat they pose on the environment.

This is the 4th consecutive year JTA’s proposed methodology has been chosen, having received strong support across the industry and by local authorities, with just over 80% of responses preferring JTA’s method over Valpak’s, who were last chosen in 2016.
JTA’s proposal is based on the 2019 mechanism, with three “one-off modifications” intended to focus and reflect on the impact and potential future impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on UK WEEE collections.
