Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Although both services measure the carbon impact of a product, a comprehensive PCF provides a deep dive into one product, requiring data collation from across the supply chain, which can be an expensive and time-consuming process. The streamlined PCF service utilises primary data that is likely to already be available to businesses and AI to bridge the data gap with secondary and industry datasets. This can help to meet business demands for multiple product carbon footprint calculations, improve accuracy of Scope 3 carbon footprint measurements or where data is not available.
Beyondly’s streamlined PCF service measures the carbon impact from cradle-(raw material extraction)-to-gate (leaving the factory), while a comprehensive PCF can be conducted cradle-to-grave (including use phase and end-of-life).
These are a few basic inputs you will need to provide to get started:
-
Product name: This should ideally be a name that is recognisable and limits the use of internal classifications.
-
Supplier name: The name of the supplier you're buying from.
-
Supplier location: This is the location where the product is being sourced from or manufactured.
-
Destination location: This is where the product is being delivered to. This typically is your receiving location.
-
Declared unit: You have the option to either identity your product by item unit or the total amount (in weight) of product purchased.
However, you can incorporate more data specific to your product to increase accuracy, e.g., tier 1 manufacturing emissions, tier 2 supplier locations, or material breakdown information.
No, this is a voluntary service; however, PCFs and LCAs are becoming increasingly important for businesses to meet the needs of the supply chain, customers, and stakeholders. For example, some large retailers are requesting this level of information from suppliers, setting deadlines for achieving and sharing this kind of environmental information.
Additionally, escalating requirements under existing and incoming regulations like the EU Digital Product Passports are requiring environmental data transparency for products. Conducting PCFs and LCAs helps to meet supply chain requirements whilst supporting environmental compliance.
