B Lab have released new B Corp Certification standards which, from March 2026, will see all certifying and recertifying businesses assessed against. The updates mark the most significant change to the standards since the framework began in 2006, placing greater emphasis on measurable impact, accountability and continuous improvement.

But while the benefits are clear, the path to certification can feel complex without the right support, as the updated standards introduce more robust and stringent requirements.

Our B Corp consultancy supports businesses working towards certification under the new B Corp standards, which have evolved from a point-scoring assessment towards a framework of minimum requirements. Companies must meet a set of Foundation Requirements, before progressing to the Impact Topic Requirements that cover key social, environmental and governance areas: Purpose & Stakeholder Governance, Climate Action, Human Rights, Fair Work, Environmental Stewardship & Circularity, Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, and Government Affairs & Collective Action.

B Corps are businesses that meet the highest social and environmental standards, so by committing to becoming a B Corp you are showing that you are not only committed to financial growth and success but also to making improvements for people and the planet.

The B Corp assessment evaluates your company in detail on the following environmental, social and governance areas: Purpose & Stakeholder Governance, Climate Action, Human Rights, Fair Work, Environmental Stewardship & Circularity, Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, and Government Affairs & Collective Action.

You are required to upload evidence for each impact topic requirement to show how you are meeting it. Achieving B Corp certification would mean that you are meeting high social and environmental standards across each of these areas representative of your size and sector, and are committed to continuous improvement.

The new standards will be applicable from 2026 onwards and are moving away from the point-scoring assessment to instead provide companies with a framework of minimum requirements they must meet across seven impact topics: Purpose & Stakeholder Governance, Climate Action, Human Rights, Fair Work, Environmental Stewardship & Circularity, Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, and Government Affairs & Collective Action. In addition, companies must first meet a set of foundation requirements, which ensure that companies are meeting the fundamental eligibility requirements before they progress to the impact topic requirements. The specific requirements companies have to meet depend on company size, sector, and industry.

B Lab have appointed 2 assurance providers to conduct third-party audits of the self-assessment under the new standards. Companies will be audited again in Year 3 and Year 5, although the frequency and type of audits across the 5 year period may vary depending on the company. This is to ensure that you are continuously improving your impact on people and the planet.

The assurance provider will issue a corrective action report which details any non-conformities with the requirements, and you will be provided with timescales and instructions to address these. Any major non-conformities need to be addressed ahead of certification and a corrective action plan needs to be submitted for addressing any other non-conformities.
