Demanding 2019 WEEE Collection Targets Confirmed

Yesterday (27 March 2019) The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) announced the 2019 household WEEE collection targets. This follows an initial draft of the targets published late in February which requested feedback from the industry on a suggested 12% increase from 2018

You can read our news story about the first draft of the targets here. These targets determine the quantity of WEEE an household WEEE producer must fund, based on their market share.

In a nutshell, producer compliance schemes are now required to collect an additional 58,000 tonnes of WEEE to achieve the new demanding 2019 targets.

Table 1: WEEE collection targets in tonnes for 2018 and the newly confirmed targets for 2019

Overall, DEFRA have set a collection target of 550,577 tonnes for 2019. As per the initial proposals, this figure is an approximate 12% increase on the total amount of household WEEE collected and reported by compliance schemes in 2018.

The reason for this requirement of a considerably higher overall collection target is to enable the UK to achieve its European Union objectives; specifically, the need to collect equivalent to 65% of the weight of EEE placed on the market during the three previous years. Up until 2019, the target level has been set at 45%.
